A MBI e o International Code Council colaboram para publicar diretrizes para o uso seguro de contêineres de transporte intermodal ISO reaproveitados como edifícios e componentes de edifícios
Mais de 30 milhões de contêineres de transporte intermodal ISO estão em uso no mundo todo atualmente. Esses contêineres foram construídos de acordo com os padrões ISO e mantidos de acordo com os padrões definidos pela "Convenção para Contêineres Seguros" da Organização Marítima Internacional (IMO).
Novos ou usados, os contêineres agora são reaproveitados em um ritmo que torna sua reutilização um setor global multibilionário. Os contêineres são regularmente reaproveitados e convertidos em usos de ocupação do Código Residencial Internacional e do Código Internacional de Construção. Como material de construção, as aplicações são muito diversas, assim como o grau de utilização do contêiner como elemento estrutural de construção.
As jurisdições locais e os programas administrativos estaduais estão reagindo à tendência crescente de reaproveitamento de contêineres de transporte, mas podem estar atrasados em termos de regulamentos e conformidade. Esta Diretriz da ICC tem o objetivo de ajudar as jurisdições estaduais e locais, bem como os proprietários, arquitetos, construtores e engenheiros em sua avaliação de como projetar, revisar e aprovar contêineres de transporte como elemento de construção.
